Hollywood Box Office: Super Mario Galaxy Movie Debuts With Mighty $370 Million As Project Hail Mary Tops $400 Million Worldwide
Mumbai, April 6 - Illumination and Universal's The Super Mario Galaxy Movie off to a thunderous start at the global box office, delivering the biggest opening weekend of 2026 (so far) with a mighty $372.50 million, slightly short of its predecessor, 2023's The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $387.80 million launch.
The video game adventure animated blockbuster scored a huge $190.10 million over its 5-day opening weekend at the domestic (North America) box office, the biggest opening of 2026, and the third biggest of all-time for an animated title. The first film debuted with $204.6 million.
Internationally, Super Mario Galaxy grossed $182.4 million over the 5-day weekend, across 23,500 locations and 54,000 screens in 80 territories. The overseas opening of the sequel was bigger than the first film, which minted $170.90 million. With a $372.5 million worldwide start, the film scored the 5th biggest opening for an animated film, and it also made Super Mario the only animated franchise with 2 films debuting over 350 million globally.
Meawhile, the Ryan Gosling-led sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary continues its stellar run and has crossed the $400 million mark through the second weekend. The film grossed a huge $70+ million worldwide in its second weekend, pushing its global cume to $420.7 million in a massive win for the original sci-fi film.
Based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary, with an around $200 million budget, has grossed $217.20 million at the North American box office, beating the entire domestic run of Christopher Nolan's Interstellar ($203.2 million). It is now headed to finish with $300+ million domestically.
Overseas, the film has scored $203.6 million at the end of the second weekend. The United Kingdom is leading the overseas race with $29 million, followed by China with $27.7 million, and Australia with $14.7 million. In India, the movie has turned into a surprise success, grossing over 45 crores ($4.85+ million), despite facing a huge competition from the local blockbuster Dhurandhar 2. It is projected to finish its worldwide run with $650 million.
