Mumbai, May 11 - Riteish Deshmukh's historical action drama Raja Shivaji is approaching 100 crores gross after another good weekend at the Indian box office. The film, based on the life of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, remains the top choice among moviegoers despite new releases and strong holdovers across languages.

Raja Shivaji Earned 18.50+ Crore Gross In Second Weekend

The film kicked off the second weekend with 3.80 crores gross on Friday, followed by 75% jump on Saturday to collect 6.70 crores gross. Raja Shivaji witnessed another solid jump of 21% on Sunday, grossing around 8.10 crores, for a cumulative estimated gross of 18.60 crores (15.60 crores net) in the second weekend.

Raja Shivaji witnessed a drop of around 53% from the opening weekend, which is a solid hold for a Marathi record-breaking opener. In the original Marathi version, the film has grossed 57 crore (48 crore net) while the Hindi version has contributed 24 crore (20.25 crore net) in 10 days so far.

Raja Shivaji Heading Towards 100 Crore Gross

Produced by Jio Studios and Mumbai Film Company, Raja Shivaji is already the third highest-grossing Marathi film of all-time with 81 crore gross, after beating Riteish Deshmukh's Ved (73 crore gross) over the second weekend. It is now behind only Baipan Bhari Deva (90.50 crore gross) and Sairat (110 crore gross) in the all-time biggest Marathi blockbusters.

The film was expected to enter the 100 crores gross club in the second week itself, but it is now projected to achieve the feat in the third weekend. However, it will be crossing Baipan Bhari Deva before the second week ends to become the second biggest Marathi grosser of all-time, and will be looking to down Sairat in the third week to emerge as the biggest industry grosser.

How Far Raja Shivaji Can Climb At The Box Office?

The Riteish Deshmukh starrer and directorial, though performing strongly, has limited appeal outside the home state, Maharashtra. It is also not benefiting from having the perception of being a regional project, which has limited its nationwide reach. A Bollywood film of this scale could have fetched much more, but that is not the case with Raja Shivaji.

However, despite the limitations, Raja Shivaji should be able to reach 125 crores gross in its lifetime run, which is a strong result for a Marathi title. It continues to remain strong in Maharashtra, which is driving its overall collection.
