Mumbai, April 8 - The debate around Bollywood's "insider ecosystem" has flared up again, this time sparked by a viral joke and a sharp industry response. Filmmaker Siddharth Anand has seemingly taken a dig at comedian Zakir Khan following the historic success of Dhurandhar 2, putting the spotlight firmly back on the much-discussed "Juhu-Bandra" narrative.

What Was Zakir Khan's Joke That Sparked Debate

During a recent awards event, Zakir Khan took a humorous swipe at Bollywood, suggesting that the industry, particularly the elite circles of Mumbai's Bandra and Juhu, was feeling uneasy about Dhurandhar 2's massive success. He said that no matter how much the Bollywood people praise Dhurandhar on social media or in interviews, the fact is that people of Juhu and Bandra are jealous of the success of Dhurandhar 2.

His now-viral line implied that while the "blast" of success happened elsewhere, the "smoke" was visible in these Bollywood hubs, hinting at insecurity within the industry. The comment quickly gained traction online, resonating with those who believe Bollywood has grown disconnected from audiences beyond metro cities.

Siddharth Anand Hits Back

The joke didn't sit well with everyone. Without directly naming Zakir Khan, Siddharth Anand responded with a pointed remark on social media, defending Bollywood's legacy. He emphasised that the very "Juhu-Bandra" ecosystem being criticised has consistently delivered some of India's all-time blockbusters over the years.

"Juhu - Bandra peeps have given all ATBB's since the past 50 years. You have to be a real duffer to undermine their contribution", the filmmaker wrote on X. Anand suggested that dismissing the contributions of this circuit would be unfair, reinforcing the idea that mainstream Bollywood still holds immense power when it connects with audiences.

This is not the first time someone has taken a dig at Bollywood. In December 2024, when Pushpa 2 took an earthshattering opening in the Hindi version, Telugu producer Suryadevara Naga Vamsi tried to look smart by saying that the people of Juhu-Bandra won't sleep peacefully seeing the numbers of Allu Arjun.

At the centre of the debate is Dhurandhar 2, which has emerged as a box office juggernaut, performing exceptionally both in India and overseas.
