Preponement Proved Fatal For Pawan Kalyan's Ustaad Bhagat Singh: Here Is Why

Hyderabad, March 24 - Superstar Pawan Kalyan's action drama Ustaad Bhagat Singh was preponed from March 26 to March 19, following the postponement of Yash-fronted Toxic, which was carrying solid buzz in Telugu states. The decision to shift the Telugu biggie initially appeared to be a smart move, as it allowed the film to occupy a seemingly advantageous release window with reduced immediate competition.

However, that early gain quickly turned into a long-term setback. By advancing its release, Ustaad Bhagat Singh inadvertently locked horns with the Bollywood biggie Dhurandhar 2, headlined by Ranveer Singh. While the clash may not have looked threatening on paper at first, the Hindi action spectacle was carrying strong pre-release buzz even in the Telugu states.

In the opening phase, Ustaad Bhagat Singh managed a decent start, benefiting from Pawan Kalyan's star power and initial curiosity, though the opening was slightly underwhelming compared to PK's last film, OG. But as word-of-mouth and interest around Dhurandhar 2 grew rapidly, the box office dynamics shifted rather quickly.

By the third day itself, the Ranveer Singh starrer had taken a clear lead in the Telugu states, eating into UBS's core market, something few would have predicted so quickly. On the first working day, Monday, Dhurandhar 2 minted over 7 crore gross, and at the same time, UBS grossed below 3 crore in the Telugu states.

This sharp turnaround highlights a key miscalculation by the makers of Ustaad Bhagat Singh. The decision to prepone was based on avoiding one competitor, but it ended up exposing the film to a much stronger and more unpredictable threat. In underestimating the pull of Dhurandhar 2, especially in a non-native market, the team misread the evolving audience preferences where content-driven, high-scale entertainers transcend language barriers.

In 5 days so far, UBS has grossed around 66 crore, while Dhurandhar 2 is quickly catching up with around 40 crore gross so far. In the long run, the Bollywood sequel is expected to beat UBS in the region, which will be a shocking result. Ultimately, what looked like a tactical shift to capitalise on a vacant slot ended up intensifying competition and gave a hard lesson to the makers that it is not just about avoiding clashes, but about correctly assessing the true strength and reach of the competition.
